Planning for long-term care often means planning for circumstances that require home health care, or nursing home care. The Medicaid Institutional Care Program (ICP) is a state/federal program that pays most nursing home costs. The applicant must meet certain medical and financial criteria. The financial requirements are based on the "income cap" and "asset test" and are different for single people and for married people. The largest issue most people face is that you must meet strict financial guidelines in order to qualify. However, should an individual qualify, Medicaid will pay for up to 100% of their nursing home costs.
